Unilever coy on “frozen food sale”

Unilever has refused to be drawn on fresh reports that it is looking to sell its Findus frozen food business in Italy.

A report in The Financial Times said the consumer goods giant is planning to send out “an information memorandum” within the next two weeks.

Talk of a planned sale first emerged late last year but a spokesman for Unilever’s business in Italy declined to comment on what he termed as “rumours”.

Findus Italy makes ready-meal versions of classic Italian dishes, such as carbonara and bolognese. It was the only part of Unilever’s European frozen food operations that the company kept when it sold Birds Eye and Iglo to Permira, the UK-based private equity group, for EUR1.7bn in 2006.
