Baskin-Robbins’ timely banana launch on Aussie crave
As prices for bananas begin to return to normal levels in Australia, Baskin-Robbins is providing another way for Aussies to get their banana fix: the brand has launched a new banana flavour ice cream.
Baskin-Robbins said the new flavour was developed specifically for the Australian market and was introduced after Baskin-Robbins franchisees reported a high level of requests for banana ice cream.
A major portion of the Australian banana crop was wiped out by Cyclone Yasi in February 2011. While the banana industry is still in recovery mode, Australian banana prices are expected to drop heavily in coming months.
“Bananas are a part of the national fabric of Australia,” said Kerry Burke, Senior Flavour Development Technologist at Baskin-Robbins, who was responsible for developing the new Banana flavour. “We have other flavours that include banana – including Bananas ’n’ Strawberries and Banana Nut – but we specifically created this flavour to cater to the Aussie palate,” he said.
The new banana ice cream is to be available in all participating Baskin-Robbins stores in Australia from October 2011.
Some banana growers have suggested that with lots of cheap bananas on the way, will Baskin-Robbins piggy-back on a predicted Australian banana glut?
