Beer strike to coincide with AFL grand final
Carlton and United Breweries workers have decided to go on strike just as AFL fans are preparing for the grand final.
Carlton and United Breweries produce Carlton Draught, Victoria Bitter (VB), Pure Blonde and many other popular beers and ciders in Australia.
The strike will occur at the Carlton and United Breweries Abbotsford, Victoria, brewery and is in relation to salary. Union members have voted to strike but it is not yet known when the strike will occur and how long it will last for.
Some employees have already engaged in small strikes with two offers from Carlton and United Breweries rejected.
A Carlton United Breweries spokesperson, Jennifer Howard, told The Herald Sun that the previous strikes had not impacted beer supply and that the company was continuing to work towards a deal with employees. She said and that if needed the company can draw supply from its other brewing sites, but this was not an ideal situation.
Two unions represent Carlton United Breweries workers, United Voice and the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU). United Voice told the Herald Sun that it was working with other unions to reach a fair deal. The CFMEU said its members had participated in previous strikes but it would not talk about future ones.
