Walmart takes out no.1 spot in 2016 Fortune 500

WalmartWalmart has topped the 2016 Forbes “Fortune 500” list.

The list includes numerous food and beverage companies with Pepsi Co. ranking 44th, Coca Cola 62nd and Mondelez International, owner of Cadbury and Oreo, ranking 94th.

Kraft Heinz places outside of the top 100, taking the 153rd spot. General Mills is close behind with position 161.

A variety of fast food and restaurant chains made the list with McDonald’s the highest ranking coming in at 109. McDonald’s was followed by Starbucks which is ranked 146 and Yum Brands, owner of KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell, came 218th.

In explaining Walmart’s number one position, Forbes said it was making a lot of progress in adapting to the 21st century.

“By giving workers raises and investing heavily in tech, its U.S. division has improved customer service and saw comparable sales rise each quarter in 2015,” Forbes wrote.

This was the 62nd year Forbes released it Fortune 500 list which ranks America’s top companies. The rankings are calculated using a formulation which considers sales, profits, assets, market value and employees.
