Food and drink producers win big for sustainability efforts

The 2017 APCO Awards trophies made from reclaimed timber

A number of food and drink producers have taken out sustainability awards at the 2017 Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation’s annual awards.

Nine other businesses from the food and drink industry were listed as finalists.

The Smith’s Snackfood Company and Sakata took out an award in the food and beverage category for improving efficiencies in waste management. They also won for achieving an 86 per cent recycling rate.

Pernod Richard Wines won another food and beverage award for changing to lightweight glass and reducing the size of their labels.

The last food and drink award went to Rawbone Pet Foods, makers of 4Legs dog food, for embedding sustainability practices among suppliers and customers.

The Smith’s Snackfood Company and Sakata also won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Design.

Nestle Australia won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Recycling.

Finalists in the food and beverage category included Nestle, Mars, Kellogg’s, Campbell Arnott’s, Chobani, Lion, Snack Foods, C.A. Henschke & Company and Buderim Ginger.

The Smith’s Snackfood Company and Sakata Environment Manager, Janine Cannell, said her company continues to drive for waste reduction.

“Being part of the Australian Packaging Covenant has helped us to contribute in a meaningful way to our global PepsiCo sustainability agenda, and packaging sustainability will remain a key focus for our business,” Cannell said.
