Woolworths supports Aus Gov food waste research investment
Woolworths has thrown its support behind the Australian Federal Government’s new Cooperative Research Centre, established to help stop food waste.
The new Fight Food Waste Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) has been given AUD $30 million in funding to support industry-led collaborations between researchers, industry and community partners to improve sustainability and profitability of Australia’s food industry.
Woolworths is a founding partner in the program’s advisory group.
Woolworths Food Group Head of Sustainability, Adrian Cullen, said partnerships in programs like the food waste CRC will allow Woolworths to play a constructive role along other parties.
“At Woolworths we have made great strides in reducing our food waste to landfill however we recognize that there is still much more that we need to do,” Cullen said.
“Our own targets to reduce food waste remain ambitious but with great partners ambitious targets are achievable. We look forward to supporting the Fight Food Waste CRC program as it formally launches in the coming months.”
Other moves made by Woolworths recently to address environmental issues have included banning single-use plastic bags, introducing its odd bunch range to sell produce that would have otherwise gone to waste and donating food to charities like Foodbank, OzHarvest and FareShare.
