Villamayor Chupa-Chups factory to close

Dutch-Italian confectioner Perfetti van Melle has decided to close a factory producing Barcelona’s iconic lollipop, Chupa Chups, in an attempt to keep the confectionary’s production in the region whilst still meeting global market demand.

Production at the site in Villamayor, which employs 121 staff, will move to a second facility in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, north-west of Barcelona.

“The decision has been taken in order to adapt production capacity to global market demand, forcing the company to rationalise its industrial structure in Spain in order to ensure its competitiveness and thus to maintain production in the country,” the company said.

Some of the staff at the Villamayor site will be offered jobs at the facility near Barcelona, although the firm declined to say many posts would be available.
