Egg welfare: Is your business an industry leader?
You may have noticed that consumer behaviour is changing significantly. People are not only demanding better
quality food, they are also seeking more information about how their food is produced.
The welfare of the animals that give us our food is becoming a key influencer in consumer purchasing
decisions. In fact, market research shows around half of grocery buyers would prefer to purchase a humanely
farmed product, over a conventionally farmed product.
Just like cartons of eggs on the supermarket shelf, more people are now starting to question the origin of the
ingredients found in their food and are looking for an assurance of ethically produced products – including how
layer hens are farmed to produce our eggs.
82% of people are concerned about the welfare of hens in cages and consumers are making a clear move
away from purchasing cage eggs. The next step, is products that use eggs.
The RSPCA Good Egg Awards present a great opportunity for businesses in the manufacturing and food
service industries to stand out from the crowd and give consumers what they’re looking for. By making the
switch to sourcing cage-free eggs, Australian businesses can not only lead the way by providing consumers
with a humanely produced product, but also gain the support of the RSPCA.
“The RSPCA is widely recognised as the foremost authority on animal welfare in Australia and consumers
place a great deal of trust and respect in the RSPCA’s name. The RSPCA Good Egg Awards are designed
to acknowledge and award manufacturing and food service businesses that commit to sourcing humanely
produced eggs’, said Hope Bertram, RSPCA Marketing Manager, Humane Food.
“The RSPCA acknowledges that sourcing humanely produced eggs is a big commitment, but it’s also an
opportunity for manufacturers and the food service industry to acknowledge consumer interest in animal
welfare, which has grown significantly in the last few years”.
If your business is already using humanely produced eggs or considering making the switch to sourcing barn
or free range eggs, the RSPCA would like to publicly acknowledge your leadership and commitment to animal
welfare.
