Australian cheeses rival world’s best at World Cheese Awards

The 2012 World Cheese awards held in Britain last month have acknowledged some of Australia’s greatest cheeses, claiming three spots in world’s top 55 cheeses.

Held on November 28 in Birmingham, the world’s largest annual cheese competition is judged by 200 international buyers. The 2012 awards received over 2,500 entries, including Berrys Creek Gourmet Cheese based in South Gippsland, which took out a “super gold” award.

Berrys Creek Gourmet Cheese was awarded a “super gold” for its “Oak Blue,” as well as a gold award for its “Mossvale Blue.” Other “super gold” recipients from Australia were Lion Dairy and Drinks for its “Tasmanian Heritage Red Square” and Woodside Cheese Wrights for its “Woodside Wakame.”

The three “super gold” recipients from Australia were placed in the top 55 cheeses in the world. Australia also received a string of gold, silver and bronze awards.
