Woolworths’ search for ‘best Aussie sausage’, winner can get onto the shelf

Woolworths has launched a competition to find the next great Aussie snag in the lead up to Australia Day, inviting customers to vote online for their ‘ultimate sausage.’

The winner will have their sausage produced and available for a limited time in Woolworths supermarkets in their State later in 2013.  They will also receive the ‘Ultimate BBQ’ for them and 24 friends which will include an appearance by Sam Kekovich, with food, drink and entertainment in their own backyard.

Entrants, via the Woolworths facebook page, will be able to design their sausage by choosing the size, meat, herbs, spices and condiments.  The sausage will then be judged by a panel of Woolworths experts on its creativity and culinary merit with the winner to be announced on Australia Day.

Woolworths Meat Category Manager, Robert Carratt, said sausages are one of the only meat products that remain popular all year round, selling approximately 11 million individual sausages every week.

“The range and choice of sausages has grown enormously over the past 15 years.  In the late 1990s we only offered about four types of beef sausages, now we offer close to 40 different types,” Mr Carratt said.

“Sausages were once seen as a budget meal option but these days the quality of ingredients has improved and the choice of flavours is limitless,” he added.

The best Aussie sausage campaign is another twist on Woolworths’ strategy for introducing more Australian-made and local product into its offering. Yesterday, Australian Food News reported on Woolworths’ Local Food Sourcing Strategy.
